Chapter Ten

Beth wandered around the tasting room with the rest of the tourists while David tried a couple of Merlots and a Chardonnay in a small private room off to the side. She’d thought about taking the tiniest of sips, enough to taste but not enough to hurt the baby, but she decided against it when she realized her motive was strictly to impress David. To appear more sophisticated and worldly, when in truth, she’d only had wine once before and hated the taste.

As much as a tour of the winery appealed to her, visiting Jack London State Historic Park was more enticing. Even if there wasn’t much to see, she loved the outdoors and next to spending the time with David, the lush landscape was the best part of the trip.

Now, if only she could concentrate and really enjoy the scenery. And quit thinking about that smack she’d laid on him. Or the way he’d responded by pulling her against him, teasing her lips with his tongue. The mere memory made her warm and tingly and she headed for the small cups of water they had set out.

Not that she was sorry she’d kissed him. Well, maybe a little, but only because the tension between them had grown like dandelions in an open field. Still, she was sick of his remarks about age, or more to the point, how young she was.

She meandered back into the private room and watched David sip the sample Roberto gave him, his head tilted back, his throat working, the sheer bliss on his face as he lowered the crystal glass.

And darn if she didn’t get turned on.

As much as she hated to keep blaming her shift in hormones, there was no accounting for her reaction. The man had only taken a drink, for goodness sake, and heat crawled from her tightened nipples, down her belly into her nether region.

She quickly turned away but not before Roberto saw her and motioned for her to join them. He was a good-looking guy, stunning really, with his dark hair and olive skin, teeth so white it blinded you. But he was so transparent it was almost comical. A charmer, a womanizer, a man who likely got what he wanted.

Two months ago she would have been flattered by his compliments and attention. But her experience with Tommy had taught her not to accept anything at face value anymore. She’d been too trusting and naı¨ve. He’d taught her cynicism. She probably ought to thank him. So why did the lesson feel so awful?

She shook away the destructive thoughts and reluctantly approached the men. To do anything else would have been rude.

“Come, Beth, you must taste this.” Roberto poured a small amount of wine into a crystal goblet and held it out to her.

She shot David a helpless glance. “I’m not much of a wine drinker,” she said, not anxious to announce her condition.

“Ah, but this is not mere wine. It’s nirvana.”

David took the goblet out of Roberto’s hand and gave her a sympathetic wink.
